**SPECIAL NEEDS**
Background. Parker arrived at HSP on a rescue transport from southern Illinois on July 15, 2017. His litter included 6 dogs (4 females and 2 males) and they were 10 weeks old at arrival. We suspected he may be deaf given his all-white coloring which stood out from his multi-colored brothers and sisters. He was adopted on August 24, 2017 into a home with two English Bulldogs (ages 5 and 8) and two small children.

Home History. Parkers family spent a significant amount of time taking him to puppy classes and teaching him hand signals for key behavior commands. He fit in well with the family and loved to snuggle with his Bulldog pack (see enclosed pictures). The family loved him very much and said Parker had no negative behaviors with humans or dogs. Parker shows signs of separation anxiety when left alone in a crate including excessive barking and drooling, however his owners continued crating him and discussed anxiety reducing strategies with the veterinarian. On at least two dozen occasions, they left Parker in a crate with the female bulldog to see if that helped. They had a trial prescription for anti-anxiety medication which they had not yet started. They began leaving the three dogs loose in a basement room to see if that helped. The family reported that Parkers separation anxiety was not significant enough to make them consider returning him.

Return History. Parkers owner surrendered him to HSP on March 16, 2018. On that day, the owners left the three dogs loose in the basement room for approximately four hours. When they returned home, they discovered a tragic scene with the female bulldog deceased. Parker was not injured and had no visible fight wounds. The male bulldog had a broken jaw. This is the only evidence available and no one has any way of knowing what happened. When the owner returned home, Parker greeted him, wagging his tail and happy to see him. The family was understandably very upset and the only course of action they could think of was to separate the remaining two dogs by surrendering Parker to the shelter.

Shelter Evaluation. Parker is currently 10 months old and presents as a happy, well-adjusted dog. He behaves well in his run (no separation behaviors) and is non-reactive to the other dogs that he can see across the aisle and in the area of his run. He is non-reactive walking through the treatment area in the presence of other dogs. We have introduced Parker to other dogs on and off leash without incident (see the available videos). He knows basic hand commands including sit, stay, and down. He loves to play fetch and returns and releases the toy gently. Parker does seem to be deaf or partially deaf.

Recommendations. Parker has lots of energy and would do best in a home with a yard and an active family. Parker is a good jumper, so he needs a 6 foot privacy fence to keep him safe at home. Although we have photographic, video, and anecdotal evidence that Parker is appropriate with other dogs, we recommend placement as an only pet in the home because we do not know what happened or why it happened in the first home. He would enjoy walks on leash with a new family, however we do not recommend that he visit dog parks where he is not directly supervised at all times. Based on Parkers successful participation in dog training courses with his first family and his behavior during our evaluations, he would enjoy doggy day care visits with small groups of other dogs under close supervision. Parker needs to continue daily training exercises to practice following leadership commands and to maintain proper pack order.
